Biscuit Factory Brief History

The Bermondsey Biscuit Factory was built in 1885 and was the first of its kind in England. It was one of the largest employers in the area at the time providing jobs for over 1,000 local residents. The factory produced a variety of biscuits which were sold all over the world. In 2001, the factory closed its doors for the last time.

The redevelopment project aims to breathe new life into this historic site and create a vibrant mixed-use destination for both residents and businesses. We originally wrote a blog on the subject HERE. In short, the plans include homes, office space, retail outlets, restaurants, bars, and a public square. It is an exciting development that will surely transform Bermondsey. Earlier this week Greystar Real Estate Partners (1st September 2022) acquired the Grosvenor built-to-rent scheme and planning on the next steps.

Recent Updates on the Redevelopment: August 2023

Construction has started on a significant housing project, comprising 1,500 homes, located in Bermondsey at the former Peek Freans biscuit factory site. The project had received approval earlier and underwent minor adjustments after Greystar acquired the site from Grosvenor.

This location is conveniently positioned within walking distance to Bermondsey station on the Jubilee line. Additionally, it’s in proximity to the historic Spa Road station, which once served as the endpoint for trains heading to Central London during the original construction of the London Bridge station.
Recent activity at the site indicates that the project is in motion. An announcement from the developer in July affirmed this progress.

In their July update, Greystar mentioned initiating foundational work, paving the way for the main building construction slated for 2024.

The Biscuit Factory project is part of a larger Bermondsey redevelopment push where boundaries from one project blend to the next. For example, the Blue Market is only steps away from the Biscuit Factory and connects by pedestrian walking paths. Both areas give homage to their history through their architectural design but with all the modern conveniences for a thriving community. This is an exciting time for Bermondsey as it undergoes a transformation into a trendy, sought-after location.
